Real Madrid have completed the signing of Chelsea defender Marc Cucurella in a deal worth £52 million, the first major acquisition of Jose Mourinho’s second spell at the Bernabéu. The Spain international returns to his homeland after five years in the Premier League.

The deal is worth an initial €60m (£52m/$70m) and Cucurella has signed a six-season contract running until 30 June 2032. He is currently with the Spanish national team at the World Cup and will join his new team-mates once the tournament concludes. Chelsea thanked the 27-year-old, who joined the club from Brighton & Hove Albion in 2022 and was part of the sides that won the UEFA Europa Conference League and the FIFA Club World Cup.

He also featured in Spain’s Euro 2024-winning squad. Relations with Chelsea’s hierarchy had cooled after Cucurella criticised the club’s direction and the decision to part ways with Enzo Maresca, and he admitted a return to Barcelona would be difficult to refuse.
