Marathon's first PvP-lite mode offers a tense, unpredictable alternative
Bungie is expanding Marathon with PvE and PvE-adjacent experiments and has unveiled Sponsored Survival, the game's first "PvP-lite" mode, which will run during the inaugural week of Season 2. Only one squad—or a solo player—deploys into the new Night Marsh map, limited to sponsored kit loadouts.
Teams can roam and engage UESC bots and some new shadowy enemies, and for the opening stretch they won’t face other players. That calm is temporary: after a certain period Rooks—late-joining, zero-stake players—begin backfilling into the match, creating an escalating and unpredictable threat.
Sessions can swing from building a small legion of robot auxiliaries to being hunted by homicidal killbot players, and everyone must reach a single exfil that only opens at the end of the 18-minute timer, forcing a final choice between truce and bloodshed. Bungie also plans to test a PVE mode in the latter half of Season 2.
