Bungie has revealed the first non-PvP, fully PvE Marathon game mode: Vault Breaker, arriving July 21. Set within Cryo Archive, Marathon's best and biggest map, the mode is designed to be playable solo, with a buddy, or in a trio. Vault Breaker lets players explore Cryo Archive while taking on a 'progressively challenging series of vaults.' You do not bring back loot after a match, with one exception: Vault Data, a new currency exclusive to this mode.

That data can be used to upgrade your Vault Breaker Sponsored Kit to take on harder vaults, or exchanged for gear usable in the rest of the game, though what that gear will be is not yet known. Bungie describes the idea as a 'low risk, high-power' PvE option that lets players experience Cryo without 'flooding the economy' with endgame gear and weaponry.

The dev team also promised an evolution of the Cradle system to let players earn new cosmetic rewards, and a mid-season update in July with quality-of-life changes, tuning and player profile stats.
