Just over two weeks into Marathon season 2, players and Bungie are grappling with an inflated loot economy. The studio confirmed that after the first week of season 2 players had obtained about the same amount of loot that took until week 11 in season 1, and a bug is causing higher-rarity items to appear more often.

“I think this season is cooked,” wrote one streamer. A June 16 update introduced weekly rewards while slightly reducing Prestige drop rates and overall loot quality, and it nerfed some enemy-spawned gear. XP from certain gear found in the Cradle, season 2’s new point of interest on Night Marsh, was also lowered.

Bungie said it is still unravelling the source of the unusual rarity distribution and has fixed related bugs, such as guaranteed gold drops appearing where they shouldn’t. Additional factors have accelerated progression, the studio added: an influx of Sponsored Kits at the season’s start and the Sponsored Survival grind, combined with an issue with the Complex Control chest, helped fill vaults more quickly.
