Manchester United are weighing a €40 million bid for Borussia Dortmund centre-back Waldemar Anton, the Mirror says. United scouts watched the 29-year-old several times and manager Michael Carrick, who moved from an interim role to a two-year deal, wants to add a centre-back as the futures of Matthijs de Ligt and Lisandro Martinez remain uncertain.

Sky has also linked Aston Villa and Atlético Madrid with Anton. Dortmund, however, are unlikely to sell. Anton is a mainstay in Niko Kovac's back line and personnel are thin after Niklas Süle's retirement and Emre Can's cruciate ligament injury. Nico Schlotterbeck recently extended his contract but included an exit clause that could allow a move after the World Cup.

Anton joined from VfB Stuttgart in 2024 and is under contract until 2028. The 29-year-old made Germany's World Cup squad as a backup behind Schlotterbeck and Jonathan Tah and could be deployed at right-back if Joshua Kimmich is unavailable.
