Manchester City remain determined to sign Nottingham Forest midfielder Elliot Anderson after their initial approach was rejected. The Etihad hierarchy are preparing to return with an improved offer imminently for the former Newcastle player, who became an ever‑present at the City Ground.

Forest are holding out for a fee around £100 million, using Declan Rice’s £105m move to Arsenal as a benchmark. City view Anderson as the profile to revitalise a midfield that surrendered the Premier League title to Arsenal and are keen to act before the England international’s World Cup prospects could push his value higher.

As a contingency, Sandro Tonali has emerged as the primary alternative. The Italian has been a key figure for Newcastle, making 35 appearances, and is admired by City’s recruitment team, but any move would be complicated by Newcastle’s lack of selling pressure after the €80m sale of Anthony Gordon to Barcelona and would demand another large fee.
