Manchester City are preparing a major midfield overhaul as they transition beyond Pep Guardiola, targeting Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson and Newcastle’s Sandro Tonali. The club views the pair as complementary additions rather than alternatives and has budgeted a move that could cost upwards of £200 million.

Forest rejected a guaranteed £106m bid for Anderson and are holding out for a fee higher than the £125m Liverpool paid for Alexander Isak, aiming to set a new British transfer record. City remain confident a deal can be struck and are weighing whether to return with a third offer or to wait in the negotiations.

City are also pursuing Tonali but face strong competition from Tottenham, who have already held talks with the midfielder’s representatives and see him as a marquee signing under Roberto De Zerbi. Any move would require a significant financial package, with City keen to future-proof the midfield amid uncertainty over Rodri, who is entering the final year of his contract.
