Magic: The Gathering’s Marvel Super Heroes set introduces The Serpent Society, a legendary creature that revives poison counters. The Serpent Society costs three mana (one green, one black, and one colorless), is a 3/4 with deathtouch, carries a Ward cost of "Get five poison counters," and reads: "Whenever another creature you control with deathtouch dies, each opponent sacrifices a nontoken creature of their choice." Poison counters first appeared in 1994’s Legends set and accumulate on a player; a player with 10 poison counters loses the game.

The rule becomes more punishing in Commander, where players start at 40 life, and choosing The Serpent Society as your commander means opponents effectively have one chance to target it before risking an automatic loss to poison. Golgari colors already include many ways to create or grant deathtouch.
