Madonna said a planned biopic about her life was abandoned after “a falling out” with Universal Studios over the budget. She spent two years on the script and two years at Universal working with line producers on budgeting and casting, and had wanted a big budget to portray her “extraordinary life.” Julia Garner had been cast to play her, and Madonna was set to direct.

She proposed making the film for less money in Serbia, but Universal balked, questioning whether she would stay there more than four days. Netflix later approached her about a limited series, but she would have had to buy the Universal script at what she called an “extortionist’s price,” and she could not find the right showrunner and writers; after eight or nine months those plans also fell apart.

With the projects stalled, Madonna turned back to music and finished her 15th studio album, Confessions II, due July 3; her previous album, Madame X, was released seven years ago.
