I'm a luxury travel reviewer and have long been accustomed to the plushest bedding and robes, private infinity pools, dedicated butlers, and the feeling that I don't need to take care of myself while on property. So when my sister asked me to attend a women's retreat at an adult summer camp in Northern California, I was skeptical.

I grew up going to summer camp and did recreational camping into adulthood, but after having kids the gear schlepping and cleanup made camping lose its novelty. I caved about a week before the retreat and booked my flight, expecting rustic accommodations and communal bathrooms.

The camp had been rebuilt and felt far more polished than I anticipated. Our cabin for four had heating and air conditioning, an en-suite bathroom, ample charging ports, and was spotless; the dining hall served genuinely great food with lots of vegetarian options.
