Ralph Fiennes will be difficult to replace as Voldemort, but HBO is recasting the role for its Harry Potter series. Many members of the new cast have been announced ahead of Season 1's Christmas Day premiere, filming has wrapped on the first episodes, and the actor set to play the series' Voldemort has not been revealed, even though the character appears in the book being adapted.

One plausible solution looks to the films' handling of the role. In 2001's Philosopher's Stone, two actors portrayed Voldemort: Richard Bremmer in the flashback and Ian Hart providing the face and voice during the climax. Luke Thallon, who plays Professor Quirrell and is a relative unknown with this as his first major role, could follow that pattern by also portraying the parasitic, non‑corporeal Voldemort who latches onto Quirrell.

That approach fits the story logic: early Voldemort lacks his own body and borrows Quirrell's physical traits to communicate, so having Thallon double up would explain why the current cast list seems a man short.
