Bryce Alakai Dettloff, a contestant on "Love Island USA" Season 8, said he was bullied in school because classmates thought he was "better looking" than his peers. During Sunday’s episode, fellow islander Trinity Tatum asked if he had "an ugly face growing up," and he replied, "No, I just looked like a girl." He recalled a middle school moment when "the hottest girl in school" told him, "You’re the cutest guy ever." Dettloff said the attention from girls brought hostility from boys.

"All the boys hated me and started bullying me for it," he said, repeating, "All the guys used to bully me. Because they thought that I was better looking." The new season has also drawn attention for other cast matters. Vasana Montgomery was removed from the cast after past videos depicting her using racial slurs, specifically the N-word, resurfaced days before the premiere.
