Gothic Remake is a classic RPG, but a large part of it feels like getting beaten in a hundred different ways. I waltzed up to the Old Camp gate, cracked a joke with the guard, and he beat me up and took all my stuff. That lesson didn’t stop me trying the same move at the next gate, and over the following hours I found myself killing “meat” bugs for food, filching what I could, and repeatedly getting mauled by wolves, scavengers, and molerats.

Combat is punishing because there’s so little room for error. Enemies deal a ton of damage, so any mistake is fatal until you find armor, and useful gear in the Valley of the Mines is mainly tied to quests and faction progress. The same goes for weapons: if you want a really good one you’ll most likely have to take it from someone else, which I discovered when I drew Minecrawlers to attack and downed a Paladin in the Old Mine so I could nick his sword.

You can get a much faster leg up by learning magic in The Price of Magic quest.
