Laufey reveal sparks 'Meanwhile' Faye meme
It hasn’t even been 24 hours since God of War Laufey was announced, and fans have already turned its premise into one of the series’ funniest jokes. Only about 20 minutes of footage has been shown, and the reveal that Laufey runs parallel to the 2018 Norse-themed reboot set the tone for the new wave of reaction.
2018’s God of War is a pretty somber game: Kratos is a strong, silent figure and his son Atreus is so scared of him he barely speaks. Much of that game and its sequel Ragnarok finds the pair grieving Faye and honoring a promise to scatter her ashes on the mountains of Jötunheim, producing quietly moving moments between father and son.
Laufey complicates that picture. The new game reveals Faye has ended up in the Everywhen, an afterlife where gods and magical beings meet new foes instead of resting, and her goal appears to be helping Kratos and Atreus from beyond. That twist has sent players into both speculation and comedy.
