1998’s Last Night (dir. Don McKellar) is one of the best movies you likely haven’t seen, though it’s only obscure outside Canada. It remains one of the country’s most critically successful independent films and features an ensemble cast that in 1998 included Sandra Oh, Callum Keith Rennie, David Cronenberg, Sarah Polley and Geneviève Bujold.

The film begins six hours before the end of the world. While no one ever says exactly what’s happening, something glowing in the sky like a second sun is about to hit Earth, and the story follows the last hours of several characters in Toronto as they figure out what to do.

Many people have already moved through panic into depressed acceptance, and the city is in the process of being abandoned. In the middle of this, we catch up with Patrick (writer/director Don McKellar), who just wants to be alone, and Sandra (Oh), stranded after petty vandals trash her car; all Sandra wants to do is get back to her husband Duncan (Cronenberg).
