BBC Studios, European production studio Wheel in Motion and Kadokawa Corporation are developing a 10-episode live-action series based on Eiko Kadono's first Kiki novel. Irena Brignull, whose credits include the Oscar-nominated The Boxtrolls and Netflix's The Little Prince, is writing the half-hour scripts that follow 13-year-old witch Kiki as she leaves home for a year of independence in the seaside port town of Koriko and establishes a flying courier service.

The project revisits Hayao Miyazaki's 1989 Studio Ghibli film Kiki's Delivery Service, itself adapted from Kadono's novel and celebrated with a 98% Rotten Tomatoes score. The announcement comes shortly after the 40th anniversary of the literary saga, which originally debuted in 1985.

Author Eiko Kadono commented, "Kiki is about to set off on another adventure into a new world. I'm confident this will be a great show.
