Kevin Smith's Best Movie Returns to Streaming
Thirty-two years after its release, Kevin Smith's debut Clerks has returned to HBO Max. The black-and-white comedy was added to the streaming library on Jun. 1 and is expected to remain on the service for several months, if not an entire year.
Written and directed by Smith, Clerks is a defining film of the 1990s indie movement. Made for a $25k budget pulled from Smith's maxed-out credit cards, it follows two convenience-store employees, Dante and Randal, played by Brian O'Halloran and Jeff Anderson, and also stars Marilyn Ghigliotti, Lisa Spoonauer, Scott Mosier, Jason Mewes and Smith himself.
Clerks also launched the View Askewniverse; Smith followed with Mallrats (1995) and Chasing Amy (1997), and most of his films — including Dogma, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, Yoga Hosers and The 4:30 Movie — occupy that shared world. Chasing Amy was added to HBO Max at the start of June, giving viewers a potential double bill alongside Clerks.
