Kenji Tanigaki's The Furious, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2025, opens wide this week. The film has been framed as a possible reset to the action standard set by the John Wick franchise and its popularization of gun fu.

The Furious follows two seemingly ordinary men as they try to rescue their loved ones from the clutches of an evil gangster who operates a human trafficking ring. One is a mute handyman from China seeking his young daughter; the other is a reporter whose wife went missing while investigating the ring.

They fight through enemies ranging from street thugs to martial arts masters as they work their way to the top of the crime organization. Since its TIFF debut, the film has amassed nearly 30 critic reviews on Rotten Tomatoes and holds a 100% score.
