Keiko Fujimori vowed to restore “order and hope” after narrowly defeating left-wing candidate Roberto Sanchez in the 7 June presidential runoff. The final results showed she outpolled Sanchez by fewer than 50,000 votes out of more than 18 million ballots cast, and the National Electoral Jury is scheduled to officially announce a winner on 3 July after weeks spent reviewing contested ballots.

“Each time we draw closer to starting on the path of order and hope for all Peruvians,” she wrote on X after being proclaimed the winner. The 51-year-old daughter of the late president Alberto Fujimori secured the top office on her fourth attempt. The campaign centred on rising crime and chronic political instability, a crisis that has seen the country burn through eight presidents in a decade.

With extortion gangs and contract killings on the rise, she vowed a strong hand similar to that of her autocratic father.
