With a release window now in place for Greta Gerwig’s Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew, the author revisited The Chronicles of Narnia and pictured the cast. Gerwig’s adaptations often take creative turns, but one character they hope remains faithful is Daniel Craig’s Uncle Andrew.

In the book, Andrew is the first real antagonist. He supplies the magic rings that send Digory and Polly to the wood between the worlds, tricks Polly into disappearing to a faraway land, and pressures his nephew to go after her while refusing to risk himself, citing poor health and old age.

Early chapters show him as rude, aggressive and morally culpable, even reveling in the danger those experiments might create. Andrew does eventually seek redemption, and his later life is more complex, but his early behavior drives Digory’s desire to be better and to protect Narnia.
