Justin Theroux leads Apple TV's remake of The Mosquito Coast
Neil Cross adapted Paul Theroux’s novel into a two-season Apple TV series that stars Justin Theroux as Allie Fox. Though the show never matched the popularity of the Harrison Ford film, the remake delivers steady storytelling and strong production values. Allie is an off-the-grid inventor who has cut the family off from phones and computers and is revealed to be in hiding.
The drama unfolds slowly, with the family evading police, NSA agents, criminals and even questions from their children, while the series’ careful cinematography and vistas keep viewers engaged. The story also ventures into Latin America and touches on immigration, human rights, police brutality, the drug trade, economic hardship and cultural divides.
Both the movie and the series spring from Paul Theroux’s 1981 novel — Justin Theroux is the author’s nephew — and the film, directed by Peter Weir, is calmer and faithful to the book’s tone.
