Universal and Imagine Entertainment are developing a sequel to the 2000 live-action How the Grinch Stole Christmas. Jim Carrey is in talks to reprise the title role, and Ron Howard will produce and return to direct; the sequel does not yet have a name. The script is being written by Alec Berg, Jeff Schaffer and David Mandel.

The trio previously collaborated on the 2003 live-action The Cat in the Hat starring Mike Myers, and have worked on shows including Barry, Dave, Curb Your Enthusiasm and Veep. Carrey has said he would be willing to play the Grinch again but prefers motion-capture to the heavy makeup and suit.

"It was an extremely excruciating process," he told Comicbook.com in 2024. "The children were in my mind all the time. 'It's for the kids. It's for the kids. It's for the kids.' And now, with motion capture and things like that, I could be free to do other things.
