Jenny Slatten, 68, and her husband Sumit Singh, 38, addressed criticism of a GoFundMe set up on May 20 to help cover her medical expenses after she announced an amyotrophic lateral sclerosis diagnosis last month. The campaign seeks $250,000 and had raised $56,360 as of publishing time.

In an Instagram video posted Monday, Slatten’s speech was noticeably slurred as they explained why they were asking for help. Singh said their research showed ALS treatment would be extremely expensive, and the couple decided to remain in India. Slatten does not have medical insurance there, and moving to the U.S.

was not an immediate option because of visa challenges and the difficulty she would face traveling alone. They also said they did not want to rely on Slatten’s three daughters in the U.S. Singh asked followers for donations, noting they had never asked for money before despite financial struggles.
