If you’re a fan of Jean-Claude Van Damme, now is a good time to revisit the film that put him in the Hollywood spotlight. Bloodsport, the underrated '80s action movie, is currently available on Tubi but will disappear from the service starting July 1. The plot is outrageously simplified: Frank Dux (Van Damme), a former U.S.

Army captain and ninjutsu expert, leaves the country to enter the underground tournament known as the Kumite. CID agents pursue him while he faces Chong Li, a ruthless fighter who will stop at nothing to win. Performances have long been criticized, and apart from Oscar winner Forest Whitaker in a minor role the cast lacks A-list names; the film was produced by Cannon Films, a studio known for lower production values.

Still, Bloodsport gave Van Damme his breakout, and its fight sequences remain highly entertaining for martial-arts fans. Bolo Yeung’s Chong Li often overshadows Van Damme with an unrelenting villainy—viewers remember the way Chong Li raises his arms and sentences opponents to death.
