Paramount confirmed at CinemaCon that Top Gun 3 is in development. Tom Cruise will reprise Pete "Maverick" Mitchell, and Jerry Bruckheimer returns as an executive producer. No other concrete details — including a release date, director or additional cast — have been revealed.

Speaking at the premiere of Not Suitable for Work, Jay Ellis said he will "happily fit the next 'Top Gun' into [his] schedule" and that a script exists. He added that Paramount, Cruise and Bruckheimer are "very excited" about the project and that the goal is to "push this film past what the last one was" and "push[] the medium forward." Ellis, who played Lt.

Reuben "Payback" Fitch in Top Gun: Maverick, was a key supporting player in that film and could return for the threequel, though Cruise remains the only confirmed cast member so far. Ellis is among Hollywood's busiest actors right now; he appeared at the Not Suitable for Work premiere and is set to star in The Rookie: North, with a possible return for the third season of Netflix's Running Point.
