With Supergirl now in theaters, attention has shifted from the Maid of Might to the Main Man: Lobo, played by Jason Momoa. The actor’s long run as Aquaman in the DCEU made him a familiar presence, but from the moment he was cast in 2014 he always felt like an unusual match for Arthur Curry.

Momoa reshaped Aquaman into a brash, joke-slinging figure who drinks, brawls and speaks in blunt, macho asides — traits that fit the Zack Snyder–era DCEU and made him one of its liveliest elements. That approach produced memorable moments, from a blink-and-you'll-miss-it cameo in Batman V Superman to the cockroach-crunching finale of Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, but it also read as more Momoa than the comic-book Arthur Curry.

All of that makes his turn as Lobo feel inevitable. Momoa reportedly texted James Gunn two words the morning the new DC Studios chiefs were announced — “Fucking Lobo” — and Gunn agreed he’d long seemed destined for the role.
