The Transformers franchise has had a turbulent run in theaters. Michael Bay directed five entries before stepping away, and his films remain the most widely known iteration of the Hasbro toy line, cumulatively earning $4.8 billion. Paramount continued producing movies without Bay with mixed results.

Travis Knight’s 2018 Bumblebee was well received and grossed $467 million worldwide, while the most recent mainline film, Rise of the Beasts, barely broke even with $441 million, becoming the lowest-grossing live-action entry. The animated film Transformers One also underperformed at the box office.

Paramount and Hasbro have tapped It: Welcome to Derry writer Jason Fuchs to pen an untitled Transformers script. Lorenzo di Bonaventura, Mark Vahradian, Michael Bay, Tom DeSanto and Don Murphy are signed on as producers, with Steven Spielberg and Hasbro as executive producers.
