Ivan Toney hat-trick in England's 5-1 behind-closed-doors win
Ivan Toney staked his claim for a starting berth by netting a clinical hat-trick as England beat Sporting Kansas City 5-1 in a behind-closed-doors friendly. The training fixture was arranged at the team's base camp to keep fringe players match fit and sharp. Manager Thomas Tuchel organised the private friendly at Swope Soccer Village less than 24 hours after England's 4-2 World Cup opening victory over Croatia.
The game, played as two 25-minute halves, gave 13 squad members who lacked game time a chance to acclimate to the North American heat; Morgan Rogers and Ollie Watkins also found the net, while established starters remained at the team hotel for recovery sessions.
Captain Harry Kane said: "It was great. Great for the guys who didn’t get enough minutes yesterday to top up the tank. It was a good test." The workout also aided tactical integration, particularly after Kane required precautionary leg strapping following late cramps in Wednesday's competitive opener.
