Mohamed Salah starred as Egypt came from behind to beat New Zealand 3-1 in Vancouver and secure the nation's first-ever World Cup victory. The Liverpool forward scored once and provided an assist as the Pharaohs overturned an early deficit, moving to the top of Group G with four points from two matches.

Egypt were hit by a sucker punch in the 15th minute when Finn Surman rose highest to head home from Tim Payne's corner after slack defending at a set-piece. The All Whites, who had already drawn 2-2 with Iran, looked capable of holding the lead as Egypt struggled for rhythm in the first half.

The comeback began in the 58th minute when Mostafa Ziko met Mohamed Hany's cross to head home the equaliser. Nine minutes later Ziko played a slick one-two with Salah, allowing the captain to drive a powerful left-foot finish into the net to put Egypt ahead; Mahmoud Trezeguet wrapped up the win in the 82nd minute with a header from a Salah corner.
