Ismael Saibari seals Netherlands exit as Morocco win on penalties
The Netherlands crashed out after a 1-1 draw with Morocco, losing 3-2 on penalties. Cody Gakpo put the Oranje ahead in the 72nd minute, but Issa Diop’s stoppage-time header forced extra time and Ismael Saibari buried the decisive spot-kick. Morocco dominated possession for long stretches, cutting through the Dutch defence and creating the clearer chances.
Azzedine Ounahi dragged one early effort wide, while Bart Verbruggen produced two excellent saves to keep the match level. The Netherlands’ best defensive moment came when Micky van de Ven recovered to deny Achraf Hakimi in the 60th minute. A second-half hydration break appeared to reset the Dutch; Crysencio Summerville’s pressure sparked the counter that led to Gakpo collecting a loose ball and finishing past Yassine Bounou.
After taking the lead the Netherlands invited pressure, Virgil van Dijk denied Saibari in the 80th minute, but Diop rose in stoppage time to equalise.
