Everyone loves white Burgundy. Made from chardonnay grapes in the region stretching from just south of Champagne to just north of Lyon, these wines are graceful, textured and joyful, but prices can be unkind. Doug Wregg of organic importer Les Caves de Pyrene calls “affordable Burgundy” “almost an oxymoron,” citing limited supply, labour‑intensive work and historic prestige; recent poor vintages have pushed yields down and prices up.

For this piece, the budget benchmark is under £25. A sensible place to start is the Mâconnais at Burgundy’s southern edge, where warmer temperatures and clay‑limestone soils produce a rounder style. Supermarkets commonly stock own‑label Mâcon Villages—Sainsbury’s Taste the Difference is now £12.50—and these easy, fruity wines are often unoaked, which can let terroir speak more clearly.

Wregg’s Domaine des Cadoles 2022 Mâcon Chardonnay is offered as a mineral, creamy example.
