Iroh’s Two Questions Remain Avatar’s Defining Line
Twenty years after Avatar: The Last Airbender first premiered, one moment still stands out. In Book Two’s “Lake Laogai,” while Zuko prepares to steal Appa, Uncle Iroh asks, “Is it your destiny? Or a destiny someone else has chosen for you?” and then delivers the line that many viewers keep returning to: “It’s time for you to look inward and ask yourself the big questions: Who are you?
And what do you want?” What makes the exchange so powerful is how it functions in Zuko’s story. Iroh’s plea comes from desperation rather than detached wisdom, and Zuko initially rejects it—regains his honor, is welcomed back, and yet remains miserable. Over time, the question becomes the thesis of his redemption: the destiny he chased was not truly his.
Iroh’s words carry weight because of who he was before he found that clarity.
