After eight years away, director Duncan Jones returned with a uniquely animated adaptation of the 2000 AD comic Rogue Trooper, which debuted at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival. Jones first made a serious sci‑fi impression with Moon and Source Code, though his subsequent Warcraft and Mute stalled his momentum.

Early responses have praised the film’s energy and visuals. Deadline hailed it as a “Fast, Funny, Visually Mind-Blowing Old-School War Movie,” and while not on the scale of a James Cameron epic, the review said it channels the spirit of the filmmaker behind the first Terminator.

ScreenDaily called the adaptation an “eccentric, entertaining animated actioner.” The Wrap highlighted “giant robots and blue soldiers and gargantuan crystals,” noting the movie adheres to the “rule of cool.” It added that Rogue Trooper “won’t be to everyone’s taste” but praised its “freewheeling energy,” “charming characters” and “genuinely awe-inspiring visuals” achieved on a fraction of a typical Hollywood budget.
