iOS 27 adds Bluetooth Channel Sounding — but adoption will be slow
Apple is adding support for Bluetooth Channel Sounding in iOS 27, a feature first announced with Bluetooth 6.0 in the fall of 2024. Channel Sounding enables precise localization, giving devices a finer sense of distance and direction. The change could expand the Find My network beyond UWB-equipped Apple devices, improving tracking for third‑party headphones, earbuds, trackers, wallets, digital keys, smart locks and other Bluetooth peripherals.
Apple says Channel Sounding can deliver secure, "centimeter-level accuracy" for uses such as digital keys when a device is within a defined range. Currently, Find My provides the most accurate guidance with Apple devices that include ultra‑wideband chips; Bluetooth generally offers only broad location information.
UWB chips are expensive and often absent from single‑purpose peripherals like earbuds and trackers, so users have relied on Apple’s UWB ecosystem for the most precise tracking. There are limits to the rollout.
