I'm still not over The Lego Movie's Oscar snub
More than a decade later, I still remember how disappointed I was when the nominees for Best Animated Feature Film were announced for the 87th Academy Awards. The list included Big Hero 6, The Boxtrolls, How to Train Your Dragon 2, Song of the Sea and The Tale of the Princess Kaguya — all fine films, but missing was what many saw as the funniest, sharpest and most visually innovative animated movie of 2014.
Before its release the film was often dismissed as a big-budget Lego commercial. The idea began when producer Dan Lin watched his five-year-old son play with two bricks and imagined a movie; Lin hired Dan and Kevin Hageman to draft an action-adventure set in a Lego world.
Lego in Denmark was skeptical until Jill Wilfert embraced the chance to bring the brand’s values to life, and Phil Lord and Christopher Miller were then brought on to direct and rewrite the script.
