I tried to create the perfect zombie apocalypse
Calling my new town Zombieville turned out to be a mistake. I seeded it with a pathogen that spread instantly, converted victims fast and produced zombies that could move twice as quickly as the average human, but patient zero Ruby Mancini barely took a step before being run over at an inner‑city intersection.
DeadOS is a simulator from developer Benn Powell, born from a desire to show the outbreak moments that games usually skip. Inspired by a cutscene in Resident Evil 3, Powell began designing DeadOS in 2019, and the pandemic that followed shaped aspects of the project — the simulation now reports the ratio of how many people each zombie infects, so a value above one produces exponential spread.
Players set parameters such as city size, population, numbers of armed citizens and police, virus transmissibility and zombie type, then hit play and watch the results.
