I am hyped for God of War Laufey and tickled by the new edits of Faye air-juggling monsters while her husband and son mourn. Still, setting the memes aside, I really hope Kratos doesn’t appear anymore in Laufey. He made a brief cameo in the 20-minute gameplay presentation that capped off PlayStation’s State of Play event, and his inclusion gave me pause.

Playing as Faye feels like a promising direction. The franchise hasn’t treated its women well—important female characters in Kratos’ life often exist only to die, sometimes at his hands. There have been attempts to change that by introducing figures who stick around and do things, like Freya, Angrboda, and Thrúd.

Faye, with a consequential history to explore, seems like the natural next step: competent, independent, and not defined by her husband. The recent games have centered on Kratos’ reckoning with his violent past and how that shapes him as a father, and Ragnarok provided a solid resolution to that arc.
