Hulu orders comedy inspired by '90s cult film The Cable Guy
Hulu has ordered a pilot for a new comedy inspired by the 1996 Jim Carrey film The Cable Guy, reuniting New Girl stars Jake Johnson and Damon Wayans Jr. While it won't be a straight-up remake, the original movie— which flopped in theaters upon release—was born a cult classic and provides the show's foundation.
The show's synopsis reads: "In a world of endless streaming, binging, and algorithms, old-school cable technician Chip Douglas (Johnson) languishes alone — until Steven Stephens (Wayans) calls to have his cable turned back on, reconnecting Chip with a childhood friend he never forgot.
The relationship gives each man something he’s been missing… until Chip's enthusiasm turns into obsession. Inspired by the movie, the show explores the darkly absurd side of modern-day male friendship." The pilot was written by Rob Rosell, Joe Piarulli, and Luan Thomas, who will serve as showrunners and executive producers alongside Johnson and Wayans Jr.
