Lockpicking in Gothic Remake feels especially brutal when you’re untrained. Your goal is to align every slider: each slider has seven holes and you must move them so the copper-coloured pin sits in the middle hole. When a slider is correctly aligned the pin will stick out.

Sliders interact with one another—moving one can move only that slider, push others in the same direction, or push others in the opposite direction—which makes complex locks hard to solve. Lockpicks have durability: by default they take two strains, and if a slider hits either side and rattles it costs one durability.

When a pick breaks the lock resets, though you can reset it at any time by pressing R; exiting the minigame with any strain on a pick will also break it. Training improves durability and reduces penalties. If you’re Trained a pick takes four strains and a break won’t reset the lock; as a Master it takes six strains and a break will also remove a connection within the lock, simplifying slider relationships.
