Thread, Zigbee and Matter are common terms on smart home device boxes, but they play different roles: Matter is a connectivity protocol — the language devices speak — while Thread and Zigbee are wireless protocols that govern how devices interact on a network. Thread builds a low-power, IP-based mesh that delivers fast responses and self-heals when nodes drop, so it generally produces fewer random disconnects than older networks.

It works well for many small devices — motion, presence and contact sensors, smart locks, bulbs and switches — and uses border routers built into products such as Apple HomePod mini, Apple TV 4K, Google Nest Hub, Amazon Echo and some Eero models rather than a single dedicated hub.

Zigbee, by contrast, relies on a dedicated hub to bridge devices to the internet. Devices like Philips Hue bulbs can use Bluetooth locally but need a hub for remote control; Zigbee isn’t IP-based and can be slower, though a wide range of inexpensive Zigbee devices and hubs are already available.
