On Windows laptops, 16GB has become the practical standard. Although Windows 11 lists 4GB as a minimum, 16GB is a sensible baseline for most people who run many browser tabs, background apps and, increasingly, generative AI; anything less will generally limit you to basic tasks like email, web browsing and video playback.

Apple’s machines are more tightly optimized, so 8GB can cover everyday use better than on typical Windows devices, but Apple has moved several models to 16GB as the starting point. More powerful MacBook Pro models offer 24GB, 36GB or higher for demanding workflows.
