How much I saved on electricity using backyard solar panels

With rising temperatures and higher power bills, I experimented with backyard solar and found a practical setup. The Anker Solix F3800 Plus is an expandable battery with a 3.84kWh capacity — a cross between a gas generator, a permanent home backup, and a portable battery.

It weighs 136 pounds and isn’t meant for tent camping, but it can run refrigerators, portable ACs, pumps, power tools and some central AC systems. I paired the F3800 Plus with two 410W rigid panels for an 820W array, though panels rarely reach their rated output.

You can plug appliances directly into the unit, set up a generator inlet and transfer switch to feed selected circuits, or wire it into a smart home panel for automatic outage detection and solar management. The smart-panel route is pricier and requires professional installation, but it behaves like other whole-home backup systems.
