John F. Kennedy Jr. met Princess Diana at the Carlyle Hotel in December 1995 to ask if she would be the cover star of his new political-lifestyle magazine, George. He arrived with several cover ideas — one showing her in a three-corner hat like one from the Revolutionary War, another placing her in the back of a limousine with the window rolled halfway up to avoid photographers — but the meeting was not romantic, Caroline Hallemann writes in her book The Kennedys and the Windsors.

Diana had already decided she would not front the magazine unless it proved itself, telling Kennedy she might consider appearing for his “50th or your 100th issue or something.” When he returned to the George offices he told staff, “Well, she said no,” and added, “But she had a great pair of legs.” The princess died in a car accident the following year.

One reason she took the meeting, sources say, was that she admired the way Kennedy handled the public eye and hoped her son William might learn from him.
