The Season 3 premiere of "House of the Dragon" opens with the death of Prince Jacaerys "Jace" Velaryon, the firstborn son and heir apparent to Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen. Jace locks Rhaenyra in her rooms, disobeys her orders and rides his dragon Vermax into the naval engagement known as the Battle of the Gullet.

His cousin Lady Rhaena Targaryen arrives on Sheepstealer, a feral dragon she has recently tamed, and their arrival distracts Jace. Vermax is shot down by ships below; Jace falls into the water and is killed when archers strike his chest, his body left floating.

He had been trying to aid his grandfather, Corlys Velaryon, who is involved in the battle. The episode also kills Sharako Lohar and Tyland Lannister during the Battle of the Gullet, while Jason Lannister is beheaded offscreen earlier. The clash between the Triarchy and Corlys's forces becomes known as the bloodiest naval battle in Westeros history.
