The Season 3 premiere opens with the long‑awaited Battle of the Gullet, the bloodiest sea battle in Westerosi history and a pivotal moment in the Dance of the Dragons. Tension builds into the fight; the pacing can be choppy, but the battle is well‑choreographed, lavishly filmed, and the production values are on full display.

The dragons are more detailed than last season—Sheepstealer in particular is thorny and ragged—and the show finds ways to give the beasts personality, as when Sheepstealer brings Rhaena a burned sheep carcass. Rhaena hops onto the wild dragon and Sheepstealer hurls flames at Velaryon vessels and at Moondancer.

Jace recognizes Rhaena and is distracted; crossbow bolts strike Vermax, whose rider sinks into the sea before Myrish archers finish him off. Rhaena’s involvement remains secret, setting up likely fallout: Rhaenyra may react with fury and Daemon could step in to protect her.
