How House of the Dragon rewrites Jace Velaryon's death
The season 3 premiere of House of the Dragon stages the Battle of the Gullet as a turning point that pushes the Dance of Dragons from civil war into outright tragedy, and it includes one of the franchise’s most heartbreaking deaths — a moment the series renders far more explicitly than its source.
Fire & Blood is presented as a stitched-together historical account, built from conflicting eyewitness reports, and its version of Jacaerys “Jace” Velaryon’s fate is deliberately vague: he attacked the Triarchy fleet atop Vermax, the dragon was wounded and flew too low, they may have crashed into or near a burning ship, Jace might have survived only to be struck by crossbowmen, and his body was never recovered.
The show, by contrast, depicts the events on-screen. After locking his mother at Dragonstone, Jace flies with Baela on Moondancer; Triarchy commander Sharako Lohar fires a grapnel that connects with Vermax and Baela severs the rope.
