House of David refreshes a familiar biblical tale
Prime Video’s House of David, created by Jon Erwin, reimagines the rise of the shepherd who becomes king with a scope that mixes fantasy-level scale, royal intrigue, and coming-of-age emotional stakes. The series treats one of history’s most told stories as a wide-ranging historical drama rather than a narrow religious retelling.
The first season centers on King Saul’s decline and David’s emergence as God’s chosen successor, drawing on the Book of Samuel for moments like Samuel’s anointing, David’s time in Saul’s court, and the clash with Goliath. The show expands the source material with creative references, original subplots, and added character development, which sometimes slows the pacing but allows relationships and political tensions room to grow.
Michael Iskander anchors the series as David, while Ali Suliman’s portrayal of Saul provides much of its emotional depth; Saul’s paranoia and pride make him a complex antagonist whose fraught bond with David drives much of the drama.
