When it comes to conspiracy and counterterrorism, few shows are as defining as The X-Files and 24. For viewers who have exhausted both and their spin-offs, Showtime’s Homeland bridges the gap between The X-Files’ conspiratorial web and 24’s action-packed fight against terrorism.

The series ran eight seasons from 2011 to 2020, is now available on Hulu and Netflix, and won eight Primetime Emmys during its run. Based on Gideon Raff’s Israeli series Prisoners of War and produced by Howard Gordon, Homeland stars Claire Danes as Carrie Mathison, a CIA officer with bipolar disorder who is transferred to the agency’s Counterterrorism Center after an illegal mission in Iraq.

The central story follows Carrie’s suspicion that war hero Nicholas Brody (Damian Lewis), a missing Marine sniper, was radicalized while held captive and plans a terrorist attack.
