HiRISE Image Shows Perseverance After Completing a Marathon on Mars

NASA’s HiRISE camera aboard the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter captured Perseverance as a green speck on the Martian surface on June 13, 2026, a day before the rover reached a distance milestone. Perseverance completed a full marathon — 26.2 miles (42.195 kilometers) — after five years and four months of driving, reaching the milestone on the mission’s 1,890th Martian day, or sol.

The previous record holder, Opportunity, took 11 years and two months to travel the same distance. The HiRISE image shows the rover’s tracks across terrain west of Jezero Crater in an area the team calls “Arbot.” The photo was taken by the orbiter’s High-Resolution Imaging Science Experiment camera.

Caltech manages the missions for NASA, and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory runs operations of Perseverance and MRO for the agency’s Science Mission Directorate as part of the Mars Exploration Program.
