Hidden (2015) Ending Explained

Written and directed by Stranger Things creators Matt and Ross Duffer, Hidden is a psychological thriller with sci-fi and horror elements. After a catastrophic outbreak, Ray, Claire and their daughter Zoe shelter in a condemned underground fallout bunker while Zoe is haunted by nightmares of mysterious creatures she calls "Breathers." The family lives in cramped secrecy, convinced they are the last survivors and hunted from above.

A revelatory flashback reframes those fears. The family had been stopped on the highway by the CDC before the outbreak, and the figures they fear are revealed to be U.S. soldiers monitoring the quarantine zone. Called "Breathers" because they wear re-breather gas masks and night-vision goggles, the soldiers' appearance looks otherworldly, while a separate flashback shows Claire bleeding black blood after cutting her hand, leading the family to conclude the illness is airborne and that they are infected.

The Breathers test Claire and Zoe and, after a positive result, prepare to kill them.
